About

One of the original fishing huts of Connemara that I first photographed some years ago but I was never happy with the results, due to the presence of electricity power lines and pylons in the background.

I always thought I might get lucky to come back here in dense fog to photograph it and block them out but never imagined photographing it in a full force snow blizzard and almost white out !

On my trip through Connemara in February 2023 I encountered all kinds weather and this was the perfect morning to finally make an image here that I’ve wanted to for some time.  I am almost complete my now four year project photographing the little fishing huts around south Connemara which all originally formed part of the Ballinahinch Castle estate, owned by the Berridge family until early last century.   The little huts, or ‘Bothainín’ as they would be called in Irish were primarily used for the gamekeepers to ward off poachers helping themselves to the sea trout and salmon.

This particular one and a couple of others in my collection now sit on the Screebe House estate which was originally built as a fishing lodge for the Berridges, one of four built in the area.
