Before I began properly exploring the landscape of Kerry and before I had my began my photographic journey, I came to this little park close to where I lived in the town of Kenmare, almost every day. Soon I was bringing my camera here too and have been doing so for nearly 30 years now. It’s not very big and there are only a handful of images to be made here.. but with different seasons and varying light I love looking at the familiar and making something new.

Fallen Branch
Sometimes you search very hard for perfection, other times it just presents itself to you in absolute serenity.
I was close to a popular walking route in Killarney National Park when I spotted this branch that had dropped into the water, and as I waded waist deep into the freezing water, passers by thought I’d probably lost my marbles ! On rare perfect foggy mornings like this you can’t pass up these opportunities even if you have forgotten your waders !
I spent quite a while staying perfectly still while my body slowly started to go completely numb but I had to wait for a little more light and for the ripples I made to subside. As it happened I ended up making a long exposure of this beautiful scene which added to the quiet peaceful feel of the scene.

Down the back again. I started photographing here last summer and I loved working in the beautiful early morning light which is what makes most of these images. Light, lines and textures .. all often overlooked but they are the basic ingredients of the photography I love to make out in the bigger wilder landscape.

A beautifully still morning on Cloonee Lake on the Beara Peninsula. I look across at these mountains from my house, and in the early morning light the mist or fog always acts as an irresistible lure to draw me over there.
I have been coming to this exact spot since the first summer I began photographing the landscape, in 1992 and its always different every time. This image was made in 2015 and long overlooked in the archives and didn't make it into my book BEARA which I'm thinking now may have been a mistake !

I have been coming to this location in Ballydonegan, just outside Allihies for over 20 years although it’s only in the last 10 that I have begun to make images that work for me. It’s a wonderful natural bowl shape of rock, smoothed by the constant waves and a great place to visit any time of the year. I made this image in winter during quite a stormy day and took my chance during a lull in the waves to get just the right balance of waves coming over the edge and staying dry !

Having spent 4 days in Connemara without the rain stopping for more than 1 hour, I had thought the journey was going to be a fruitless one photography wise. But on the final morning I was determined to get out and hope for the best. Setting off in the dark and rain, I soon noticed a small chink of light in the sky ahead of me and waited for a while. The rain stopped long enough for me to get out of the car and make a few images before the heavens opened again , but that’s summers in Ireland for you !!

I had thought about this image for many years before I finally got to make it. I was in the UK, in the lake district and felt no connection at all. I quickly changed plans, rebooked a ferry and drove through the night to get to Mayo. The morning was overcast and stormy and Downpatrick Head deserted. It was perfect for a series of uninterrupted 3 minute long exposures, blurring the surf and clouds to contrast against the rock with it’s own time reference stamped in the rocks.

When I’m not in Kerry or West Cork.. Connermara is the next place that feels very special and one which I have a real connection to now. On previous visits I noticed these small little structures dotted around the landscape which intrigued me. Too small to be houses, or boat sheds I finally discovered the locals call them ‘ Bothainín ‘. Bothain is Irish for a hut, and adding -ín on to the word usually denotes it as being , little, small or in a name, junior.
It turns out they were little huts that bailiffs from the large estates would sit in and guard the running salmon on the rivers from local poachers. I spent a few days photographing them until finally found this one on the perfect morning with a brooding sky offset by the lovely warm colours of Autumn.

A beautifully still morning on Lough Leane, just before sunrise. Shortly afterwards, the sky behind me turned into an amazing show of fire and orange with a spectacular sunset. But ahead of me the muted sky only reflected a hint of that which is what I preferred to concentrate on and capture an altogether more quiet and still scene.
Just at the right time, the two little ducks who had been in the rushes, broke cover and with a slow exposure set on the camera, their movement was captured in a nice little blur.

Heading out in bracing stormy conditions can be daunting but also exhilarating and rewarding. I always put safety first and get to know an area well before I come back in rough weather and work in a spot that is relatively danger free ! I love the drama of the crashing waves against these black rocks on the shores of Coulogh Bay in Eyeries.

St. Finian's bay is somewhere that I end up many times during the year. I rarely set out to go here, as in my head I'll never top the 'Skellig Moon' image I made here, but yet I find it hard to pass by. The beauty of this place is that its different almost every time you visit it. The light on the Skelligs varies so much and the sea conditions are so changeable , there's always something new to see and to photograph.
This time I was drawn by the large surf, but also by the intense greens and blues in the water as the waves rolled in. Another worthy addition to my growing collection of Skellig images.

Derrynane is quite possibly the most beautiful beach in Ireland and a very special place for me. I have been coming here and photographing it right from the very beginning of my photographic journey and it's always a pleasure to come back here.
This image was made on a beautiful summer's evening just after sunset as the sky was filled with a radiated pink glow and soft light and spending the couple of hours watching the tide go out was well spent working out a nice minimal composition.
